Meet Our Founders
While Ernest and Effie are no longer with us, they certainly are in spirit and deed.
A Third-Generation Company Focused On Growth
When we see a beautiful building or a classic car it’s easy to overlook the thousands of people, experiences and efforts that came before and combined to produce something special. It is this way with EE Sewing. When did we begin? Officially in May of 1997. But truly? Who knows?
It may have begun with Ernest Cowles (one of the “E”s in EE Sewing) when he began working at McDonnell Douglas aircraft division in Tulsa in the late 1950s. Or maybe when Ernest was on one of the many engineering teams making components for the Apollo Lunar Lander in the 1960s. Or maybe when he was working in quality control at American Airlines for landing gears, brakes and jet engines. Oh, and the second “E”? Her name was Effie. She played a pivotal role in what EE Sewing is today.
Effie, ever energetic, eager to learn and live began working for Fabricut in Pryor, Oklahoma in 1973. (At this time both founders, Joe Finer and Harry Gutterman were active at Fabricut.) Effie began working, as a way, to get out of the house and have some “mad” money.
But where Effie started was not where she ended up. Effie went on to be a production manager/supervisor for finished product and to forge relationships that would last for decades.
Then in 1996 as Fabricut began winding down their own finished product division EE Sewing was born. So, in May of 1997 Ernest and Effie (EE Sewing) began producing top treatments for Fabricut. Ernest and Effie’s drive, obsession with excellence and love for production along with Fabricut’s extensive market presence and product offerings was a hit! EE Sewing began to grow. And grow it did, to the point in 1997 the phone rang in Indiana at their son Luke’s home. The cottage retirement business was more than Ernest and Effie envisioned and did Luke wish to join? Luke did!
From that moment until now EE Sewing has grown steadily and is now a supplier to the world’s premier hospitality companies offering a full range of window treatments, on staff field services and bedding options. While Ernest and Effie are no longer with us, they certainly are in spirit and deed.
What they began is being propelled into the 21st century not only by their son Luke, but also their granddaughters Sarah Cowles Sorenson and Annie Cowles. We remember the past; we live in the present and we dream for the future.
